Function

As Track Calculator You will be responsible for providing technical and financial support for rail projects from start to finish. You will contribute to projects relating to, amongst other things, rail infrastructure, overhead lines, signalling systems and installation works, and translate the needs on site into a realistic and competitive cost estimate.

You combine analytical thinking with a hands-on approach. This means that you don’t just work from behind your desk, but also Site visits 1 to 2 days a week carries out, consults with project managers and refines the scope of projects. Based on these insights, you prepare calculations, quotations and proposals that are both technically sound and commercially strong.

Your duties will include:

• study the specifications and tender documents and translate them into a clear cost estimate;
• preparing cost estimates and initial budgets based on a review of the project documentation and site visits;
• requesting and comparing quotes from suppliers and subcontractors;
• drawing up competitive quotations and cost estimates;
• monitor tenders and oversee the necessary administrative and technical input;
• consult with project leaders to ensure that the handover to the implementation phase runs smoothly and is comprehensive;
• accurately assess and report on the financial and technical risks of a project.

You’ll be based in Mechelen, involving regular visits to the construction sites and liaising with colleagues in Ghent. For this role, it is important that you already have experience in railway projects and that you can navigate easily between technical details, on-site realities and cost estimates. There is scope for a 4/5 part-time employment for the right candidate.

Profile

For this role, we are looking for a quantity surveyor with a solid grounding in rail-related projects and a genuine interest in both engineering and figures. You do not necessarily need to have worked as a cost estimator before, but you do have relevant experience in the rail sector and feel comfortable gathering project information on site and translating it into an accurate cost estimate.

We expect you to:

• have 3 to 5 years’ relevant experience in railway works, infrastructure or a related technical field;
• have a good understanding of railway projects, site organisation and the practicalities of project delivery;
• you are strong at analytical thinking, working accurately and interpreting cost structures;
• communicates effectively with project managers, suppliers and subcontractors;
• is able to work on cases independently and manage priorities whilst meeting tight deadlines;
• are willing to carry out regular site visits to construction sites in and around Mechelen and Ghent;
• have a keen interest in technical specifications, tendering and budget monitoring;
• demonstrates a practical, committed and organised approach to work.

Experience in cost estimation is an advantage, but what is more important is that you understand the sector, are keen to learn and can accurately assess what a project on site really entails. Knowledge of railway infrastructure, overhead lines, signalling systems or installation work is a definite asset.
