What sort of jobs are available in the logistics sector?

Logistics is a broad field with many different roles. A dispatcher coordinates transport operations and keeps track of journeys and drivers. A planner — such as a junior planner or UK planner — ensures that deliveries and routes are properly coordinated. A logistics clerk supports the day-to-day running of the warehouse or the administration department. And a workshop and logistics manager combines operational management with on-site coordination.

As well as the more operational roles, there are also roles where customer contact is key. A customer service representative acts as the point of contact for customers and follows up on cases, deliveries or enquiries. Each role has its own responsibilities and workflow. Together, they ensure that the logistics chain keeps running smoothly — from the initial order to the final delivery.

Frequently asked questions about logistics jobs

Do I need a qualification to work in logistics?

That depends on the role. For many operational and administrative roles, relevant experience carries just as much weight as a qualification. For planning or coordination roles, employers sometimes require a bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge, but this varies from vacancy to vacancy.

What is the difference between a dispatcher and a planner?

A dispatcher manages daily transport operations and drivers, and steps in when problems arise. A planner takes a more forward-looking approach, drawing up routes, timetables or deliveries for the coming days or weeks. Both roles require the ability to cope with stress and a good overview of the situation.

Are there any part-time jobs in logistics?

Yes. Some roles, such as customer service representative, are also available on a part-time basis. The job description always states whether the role is full-time or part-time.

Which companies can I approach for a job in logistics?

Logistics vacancies are available at transport companies, distribution firms, manufacturing companies with their own logistics departments, and specialist logistics service providers. Both large organisations and smaller, regional companies are looking to recruit logistics staff.
