Junior site leader
Function
As Site Leader In Mechelen, you will be the main point of contact on site and the right-hand person for the team of 8 to 10 colleagues. You will help keep day-to-day operations on track, maintain an overview when the schedule changes, and ensure that everyone knows what needs to be done. You will be working in a technical environment where railway infrastructure, overhead lines and installation works come together — varied work, with the necessary responsibility and team spirit.
Your duties will be varied and practical:
- You will coordinate the work on site and monitor the schedule.
- You will manage workers and subcontractors and ensure that they work together smoothly.
- You deliver toolbox briefings and ensure that in a correct and consistent manner about the safety rules.
- You will draw up digital daily reports and handle the administrative follow-up.
- You order materials and liaise with the relevant parties to ensure the site continues to run smoothly.
- You contribute ideas to technical and practical solutions, even if unexpected problems crop up.
- You are close to the team: approachable, clear, fair and compassionate in your approach.
You’ll be taking on a role that involves a lot of autonomy and variety. You’ll usually go straight to the construction sites and pop into the office in Muizen from time to time for a meeting. Night and weekend work are part of the job, but the schedule is known in advance.
Profile
For this role, we are primarily looking for someone with the right attitude, a flair for technology and, above all, plenty of a desire to learn more. Experience in the railway sector is an advantage, but certainly not essential. As the sector is quite specialised, motivation, maturity and a practical approach at least as important as your qualification.
Your profile:
- You have a bachelor’s or graduate-level qualification, preferably in civil engineering, electromechanics or a similar technical discipline.
- You have 0 to 3 years’ experience, or you’re a start-up looking to grow quickly.
- You have a keen interest in technical matters and feel at home in a construction or industrial environment.
- You can work independently and remain calm when you need to react quickly at night or at the weekend.
- You have a natural leadership style: clear, firm where necessary, but also fair and inclusive.
- You communicate easily with workers, subcontractors and colleagues, even within a team made up of people from different backgrounds.
- You are meticulous in your administrative work and can handle digital reports and follow-up tasks correctly.
- You are flexible in terms of working hours and travel, with work at various sites across Belgium.
- Ideally, you should live in Flanders, Brussels or Wallonia, provided that commuting remains feasible for a site-based role north of the Charleroi–Liège line.
A driving licence B, experience in site supervision or a first managerial role are valuable additional assets. Above all, we are looking for someone who genuinely wants to develop within a technical and specialist niche.

Offer

On top of that, you can look forward to a whole host of additional benefits:

- Net expense allowance
- Meal vouchers
- Group insurance
- Hospitalisation insurance
- One-to-one credit scheme: 8 hours’ work = 8 hours’ pay or time off in lieu

There’s structure to the schedule too: you’ll receive it about four weeks in advance, and during quieter periods the pace is noticeably slower. You’ll also benefit from construction leave, Christmas holidays and some extra downtime, so that there is still plenty of breathing space away from the site.
