Kies je er in plaats daarvan voor om (een deel van) je 13e month into your cafeteria plan, those deductions usually do not apply or apply to a much lesser extent. You then spend (almost) the entire amount on your chosen benefit.
Are there also disadvantages associated with the cafeteria plan?
A cafeteria plan also has a few points to be aware of. For instance, you do not immediately become the owner of your chosen benefit. If you opt for a smartphone, for example, your employer purchases it in the company's name and depreciates the device over a period of 2 years (for other electronics, such as a laptop, that period is often closer to 3 years). In practice, you are therefore renting the smartphone from your employer for those 2 years. Only after that can you take permanent ownership of it, usually for a symbolic residual value. Do you change employer within that period? Then you either buy the device, or claim the remaining budget back from your employer.
In addition, you accrue slightly fewer social rights. Your employer normally deducts social security contributions from your end-of-year bonus. Those contributions partly determine how much pension you build up and how high a potential illness or unemployment benefit may be later.
If you convert (part of) your bonus into a benefit from the cafeteria plan, you pay no or fewer of those contributions on it. That portion then counts for little or nothing towards your pension or benefits. In practical terms: if you convert approximately €1,000 of your bonus for three consecutive years, that ultimately makes a difference of around €1 net per month on your pension.
Small, then, but not non-existent. Above a certain wage ceiling, you no longer accrue any additional social rights anyway, meaning the impact for many people disappears entirely. Do you still want to avoid this effect? Then many cafeteria plans also offer options within supplementary social security, such as pension savings or a hospitalisation insurance policy.
So, what will you choose?
Is it better to have your end-of-year bonus paid out now, or do you put the budget towards the cafeteria plan?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to that. What is the best choice for you depends on your situation and what you consider important at this moment. Do you want to keep as much as possible in the short term, without committing to anything? Then having it paid into your account is the simplest option.
Are you open to having slightly less money in your account, in exchange for more value? Then the cafeteria plan is worth considering. Especially if you were already planning to purchase something that is included in your employer's offering, such as a laptop, a bicycle, or supplementary insurance. You then get more out of the same amount than if you first receive it in your account.
Are you having second thoughts because of the disadvantages we discussed above? Then take a moment to consider your own situation. Are you likely to change jobs soon? In that case, the fact that you are effectively 'renting' a chosen benefit from your employer for a period of time may carry more weight. Do you consider the impact on your pension or benefits important? Then you would more deliberately choose options within the cafeteria plan such as pension savings, rather than, for example, multimedia.
