Project Engineer / Mechanical Draughtsman

Location: Geraardsbergen, East Flanders, Belgium Specialisation: Engineering Salary: € 3.000 - € 4.000 gross / month Contracttype: Indefinite time Hours: 40 hrs/week Work ritme: Day

Function

As a Project Engineer/Mechanical Draughtsman, you act as the link between customer requirements, the design and production in the workshop. Around 50 to 60% of your role involves engineering and draughting. You will also assist with the technical and operational preparation of projects.

  • Design and drafting of complex mechanical components, precision parts and moulds
  • Revise existing drawings based on feedback from the studio
  • Interpret technical drawings and translate them into a feasible production method
  • Examine customer enquiries from a technical perspective and help determine the best way to produce a component
  • Discuss technical issues with clients, together with the person in charge
  • Submit the drawings to the workshop and explain how the project is to be carried out
  • Carry out work planning and translate customer enquiries into internal work orders
  • Ordering specific materials and tools for ongoing projects
  • Carry out cost analyses and monitor whether projects are being completed within the allocated time and budget
  • Preparing and managing measurement reports, technical data sheets and other quality documentation
  • Work closely with the current draughtsman to master their specific working methods and technical knowledge
  • Depending on your experience and skills, you may eventually accompany us on visits to clients for technical discussions and site surveys
  • Opportunity to gradually take on more responsibility for quality control and project coordination

In the longer term, the aim is for you, as a Project Engineer/Mechanical Draughtsman, to progress to a key role within the company. You will gradually take on the responsibilities of the current chief draughtsman and may go on to become the managing directors’ right-hand person for technical and operational coordination.

Profile

For the position of Project Engineer / Mechanical Draughtsman We are looking for someone with a strong technical background and sufficient insight to understand how a designed component can be produced effectively. Experience is a key asset, as you will eventually be taking over from an experienced colleague.

  • Bachelor’s degree (A2) in Electromechanics, Design and Manufacturing Technology or a comparable technical discipline
  • Equivalence based on relevant technical experience is also possible
  • Experience with CAD and/or CAM systems
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks and/or HyperMill is a major asset
  • You can read and interpret technical plans
  • You understand how mechanical parts are machined and/or assembled
  • Experience in machining, metalworking, mechanical engineering, mould making or precision engineering is a significant asset
  • You work accurately and in a structured way
  • You find it interesting to combine draughting with work planning and technical administration
  • You find it easy to communicate with colleagues in the workshop and can convey technical information clearly
  • You feel at home in a smaller organisation where people work together flexibly and responsibilities are broader than in a strictly defined role
  • A good command of Dutch is essential
  • Technical English and/or French is an advantage when dealing with customers and suppliers

Organisation

You will be joining a Belgian family-run business that has been operating in the technical metalworking sector for around 55 years and is now run by the third generation. Six years ago, the company had around six employees; it has since grown into a compact team of around thirteen people.

The company has its historical roots in mould-making, an activity which still accounts for around 20% of its current operations. Its core business now lies in the production of complex, medium-sized to large mechanical components and prototypes for customers.

They deliberately focus on technically challenging projects rather than straightforward mass production. Wherever possible, projects are carried out entirely in-house: from technical preparation and programming to machining, production and quality control.

As a Project Engineer/Mechanical Draughtsman, you therefore work very closely with the workshop. You get to see the parts you have designed being actually produced and can consult directly with the people who make them.

Offer

For the role of Project Engineer/Mechanical Draughtsman, the remuneration package will be tailored to your experience and technical knowledge. As both candidates with relevant experience and those with stronger technical profiles may be considered, the package will be assessed on an individual basis.

  • Competitive gross monthly salary depending on experience
  • Meal vouchers of €10 per day worked
  • Company car is negotiable
  • 39-hour week with 6 ADV days
  • Flexible leave arrangements typical of a smaller family business
  • Hospitalisation insurance is currently being reviewed with a view to offering it from next year
  • Group insurance is not currently provided as standard, but this can be discussed
  • Intensive training and handover by the current experienced draughtsman
  • A clear career path towards becoming a lead illustrator
  • In the longer term, the opportunity to take on a broader coordinating role and greater responsibility within the company
